Bronze finish for Australia at World Championships
The Australian junior men’s coxed four has won a bronze medal on the final day of action at the 2010 World Junior Rowing Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.
Coxed by Jack Alpe (NSW), the crew of Thomas Amies (QLD), David Watts (WA), Matt Cochran (WA) and Angus Moore (ACT) finished third behind Switzerland and Italy in a time of 6:21.85.
Switzerland controlled the race from the start, while Australia produced a strong second 1000m to catch Italy, before being edged out by 0.34 seconds.
In the other A Final contested by an Australian crew, the women’s junior double scull of Madeleine Edmunds (QLD) and Jessica Hall (QLD) finished in fourth place.
France won the gold medal from Italy and Germany, while Australia recorded a time of 7:24.73, five seconds shy of the bronze medal position.
The junior men’s quad scull of Thomas Sacre (NSW), Cameron Smith (QLD), Andrew Curnow (VIC) and Nicholas Wheatley (NSW) claimed second place in the B Final which was held earlier on Sunday.
After narrowly missing a place in the A Final, the crew bounced back in style to be denied a win in the B Final by just 0.04 seconds. Ukraine took the honours in a time of 6:08.18, while Belarus was third.
National High Performance Director Andrew Matheson says a lot of positives could be taken from the regatta.
“Winning two bronze medals at international level is always a good achievement,” Matheson said. “We have a good group of juniors who will continue to improve under the right guidance and we can expect some more from them in the years to come.
“With this group we have identified them as potential candidates for the 2016 Olympic Games, so it will be good to see how they develop over time.”

Australia strikes bronze at World Championships
The Australian junior women’s four has won the bronze medal at the 2010 World Junior Rowing Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.
Hannah Vermeersch (WA), Emma Basher (SA), Olympia Aldersey (SA) and Natasha Gay (WA) were involved in one of the closest finishes of the regatta, with the top four crews all finishing within two seconds of each other.
The Australian crew held second position for the middle section of the race, but was overhauled by the USA in the closing stages.
New Zealand won the gold medal, USA won silver, while Australia settled for bronze in a time of 6:51.03.
The Australian junior men’s four of Louis Snelson (NSW), Michael Bernerius (NSW), Aaron Wright (NSW) and Thomas Gunton (NSW) finished sixth in their A Final. They held third position for the first 1000m, before crossing the line in 6:20.18.
Earlier in the day the women’s double scull crew of Madeleine Edmunds (QLD) and Jessica Hall (QLD) won their semi-final to qualify in a middle lane for the A Final on Sunday.
The men’s coxed four crew of Thomas Amies (QLD), David Watts (WA), Matthew Cochran (WA) and Angus Moore (ACT), coxed by Jack Alpe (NSW), finished second in their semi-final to qualify for the A Final, but the men’s quad scull crew of Thomas Sacre (NSW), Cameron Smith (QLD), Andrew Curnow (VIC) and Nicholas Wheatley (NSW) finished fourth in their semi-final by only 0.3 seconds to miss out on a berth in the A Final.
Eleanor Wilson (QLD), Katrina Bateman (VIC), Chloe Hill (QLD) and Regan Spark (QLD) rounded out their campaign with a second place in the B Final.

Australian juniors underway in World Championships
The Australian Junior Rowing Team has performed well on the first day of the 2010 World Junior Rowing Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.
Australia has six crews competing in the regatta and all crews were in action, chasing both places in the semi-finals and finals.
The women’s double scull crew of Madeleine Edmunds (QLD) and Jessica Hall (QLD) won their heat of the women’s double scull to progress to the semi-finals in an excellent performance.
Australia was in second place for the majority of the race, but passed Greece at the 1500m mark and cruised to victory, winning in a time of 7:36.15.
Joining the women’s double scull in the semi-final stage of the regatta were the men’s coxed four, who finished second in their heat behind Italy.
Coxed by Jack Alpe (QLD), the crew of Thomas Amies (QLD), David Watts (WA), Matt Cochran (WA) and Angus Moore (ACT) crossed the line in 6:52.68.
Hannah Vermeersch (WA), Emma Basher (SA), Olympia Aldersey (SA) and Natasha Gay (WA) finished second in their heat of the women’s four and will row in a repechage on Friday.
Both the men’s four of Louis Snelson (NSW), Michael Bernerius (NSW), Aaron Wright (NSW) and Thomas Gunton (NSW) and the men’s quad scull of Thomas Sacre (NSW), Cameron Smith (QLD), Andrew Curnow (VIC) and Nicholas Wheatley (NSW) finished in third place and will row a repechage, while the women’s quad scull of Eleanor Wilson (QLD), Katrina Bateman (VIC), Chloe Hill (QLD) and Regan Spark (QLD) finished six to also book a repechage row.
The second day of the regatta will commence on Friday morning.
