RA News: Issue 56

Message from the CEO

Welcome to the latest edition of RA News in what has been a busy period for Rowing Australia off the water.

Following a long process of planning and construction the Rowing Australia office was relocated to the new building down in Yarralumla Bay in January. This was the latest step in the partnership between the RA and AIS and means that all staff working on the national administration of rowing work directly alongside one another.

The move coincided with the Federal Government’s latest round of sports funding that saw $300,000 allocated to rowing as part of the Green and Gold Project. Senator Mark Arbib, Minister for Sport, announced this funding boost last week and it comes at a time when our elite program is moving into gear for the coming year.

2011 is a very important year on the water for our elite athletes and the NSW State Championships this weekend will provide some very strong racing ahead of the 2011 Australian Rowing Championships and Interstate Regatta.

Rowing South Australia continues with their work ahead of the Nationals and is doing a fantastic job in ensuring all is ready come the first race on Monday 7 March. WCSN is once again providing the rowing community with a fantastic service on the day of the Interstate Regatta, with all racing streamed live at www.wcsn.com.au. For more information on how to subscribe to their service please refer to the article later in the newsletter.

The first few months of 2011 have proven to be a challenging time for some members of the rowing community with the extreme flooding of Queensland, northern NSW and northern VIC resulting in significant damage to a large number of rowing clubs. Rowing Australia sends its thoughts and wishes to all those that have been affected and has instigated a boat loan program to provide boats for those schools and clubs in need. More information on this program is available later in this newsletter.

The Rowing Australia Board will meet at the end of next week and there are a number of important issues that will be discussed around the Board table:

  • The progress of the ongoing ROMS Review
  • Consideration of fundraising guidelines for National Teams
  • The progress of the 2014 World Masters Games Bid
  • The progress of discussions regarding the 2013 and 2014 World Cups

Make sure you stay tuned for the next RA newsletter on Thursday March 17 to discover the outcome of these discussions.

Over the next four weeks I encourage all athletes to enjoy their preparations for the 2011 Australian Rowing Championships and I look forward to seeing many of you at West Lakes.

Andrew Dee
CEO Rowing Australia
