Olympia’s dreams to take shape in Singapore
(includes announcement of full 2010 Australian Junior Rowing Team)
Olympia Aldersey today fulfilled part of her rowing destiny as she was named in the 2010 Australian Junior Rowing Team.
Aldersey was among 21 athletes named for the 2010 World Junior Rowing Championships, which are to be held in the Czech Republic in August. The team was named following four days of selection trials as part of the 2010 Rowing Australia National Selection Trials at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.
Aldersey was named in the junior women’s four, but it was her win in the junior women’s pair with South Australian compatriot Emma Basher on Saturday that was more significant.
By winning the event, Aldersey and Basher, will be identified for nomination to the Australian Olympic Committee to be part of the Australian team at the first World Youth Olympic Games. The AOC must now ratify the nomination before naming the team to contest the event in Singapore in August.
Aldersey, 17, has a history intertwined with the Olympic movement, after being born during the Opening Ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Her parents named her Olympia, and the young South Australian says the name has made an impact on her life to date.
“I used to do ballet before I rowed, but ballet wasn’t an Olympic sport so I realised that I wasn’t going to get there,” Aldersey reflected. “As soon as I stated rowing, I realised I was pretty good at it, so I just wanted to keep going.
“All my friends say ‘Olympia at the Olympics would be pretty cool’ and maybe it can be my destiny!”
Her drive and passion since starting rowing in 2007 has made her one of Australia’s most exciting young rowers and she describes her nomination as a “dream come true”.
“To be able to represent your country at such a big international event and experience the first ever World Youth Olympic Games is something that I am definitely looking forward to.”
In the women’s pair final on Saturday, Aldersey combined with Basher to win one of the closest races of the regatta. The pair fought out a nail-biting victory, 0.9 of a second ahead of the West Australian pair of Hannah Vermeerch and Natasha Gaye.
Aldersey says that with the importance of the race made it more challenging than usual.
“It was exciting to do well today and it was an amazing experience,” Aldersey said. “They got in front of us at the beginning and it was pretty stressful, but we kept breathing and staying in our own race and just kept going.
“The pressure is a privilege here. We have so many talented juniors and there are so many people pushing us and it is good, because if you make an Australian team you know that you have talented people rowing with you.”
West Australian’s Matt Cochran and David Watts claimed an emphatic victory in the men’s pair on Saturday to also meet the selection criteria and gain nomination to the AOC.
With Australia only sending a women’s and men’s pair to Singapore, Cochran and Watt took their chance and crossed the line two and a half lengths clear of the field.
Australia will send five crews to the World Junior Rowing Championships, with crews to be entered in the men’s four, men’s coxed four, women’s four, women’s quad scull and men’s quad scull.
In 2009, the Australian Junior Team won four medals at the corresponding event, and progression amongst the next generation of Australian rowers is continuing to accelerate as selectors, coaches and national talent identification officials look ahead to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Rowing Australia National High Performance Director, Andrew Matheson, says the 2010 Australian Junior Rowing Team contains many talented athletes.
“We have been really happy with the development of our junior group and across this weekend they have taken another large step forward,” Matheson said. “It is really important to continue identifying junior athletes as they are the future of rowing in Australia.
“Although success at international regattas is an indicator of how the program is developing, our major focus at this point with these junior rowers is preparing them for 2016, and 2010 will provide a good stepping stone for them all.”

RA media release:
Victorian combination step up the pace
2008 Beijing silver medallists Cameron McKenzie-McHarg and James Marburg have shown their class to claim the final of the men’s pair at the 2010 Rowing Australia National Selection Trials at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.
With a slight breeze blowing across the course, McKenzie McHarg and Marburg, who were part of the men’s four in Beijing, produced a strong second 1000m to claim victory and position themselves as the number one ranked pair heading into trialling for the men’s four and men’s eight later this week.
The Victorian pair moved away from the field across the last 500m, with the fast finishing Matt Ryan (NSW) and Fergus Pragnell (NSW) grabbing second place, and the young AIS pair of Joshua Dunkley Smith (VIC) and Tom Larkins (VIC) taking third.
Karsten Forsterling (VIC) moved to the top of the rankings in the men’s sculling group after defeating a top class field in the men’s single scull final.
Forsterling has been one of the form rowers of the selection trials after making his comeback to competition this year, and held off the challenges of 2008 Beijing Olympians Chris Morgan (SA) and David Crawshay (VIC).
Rowing Australia National High Performance Director Andrew Matheson says he is happy with the progress made to date.
“The men’s sweep and sculling groups have thrown out some interesting and pleasing results in the smaller boats,” Matheson said. “These first two days have given us the chance to rank all of the athletes and now we can see who forms the best combinations in the bigger boats.
“We have a few ideas in mind in regards to who should be where but it is important we view all the possibilities.”
Kerry Hore (TAS) made it back-to-back victories in the women’s single scull with a bow ball-to-bow ball victory over Sally Kehoe (QLD). The two AIS scholarship holders once again proved their class, while fellow AIS scholarship holder Kim Crow (VIC) crossed the line in third place.
Double world champion in the women’s lightweight quad scull, Alice McNamara (VIC) took out her second final of the women’s lightweight single scull. Hannah Every-Hall (QLD) recorded another second place finish, with her and McNamara heading into the lightweight double scull trials as the leading pair.
Anthony Edwards (TAS) and Sam Beltz (TAS) won their third consecutive race in the men’s lightweight pair, with Ben Cureton (WA) and Todd Skipworth (WA) finishing in second place, while Pauline Frasca (VIC) and Phoebe Stanley (VIC) also won their third race of the trials in the women’s pair.
The next stage of the selection trials will now consist of seat trialling across all bigger boat categories, before the Senior A and Under 23 squads are named on Sunday 2 May. The Junior team will be named this Monday (26 April).

RA media release:
Interstate battle continues at selection trials
The men’s lightweight rivalry between Tasmania and Western Australia has continued on the first day of 2010 Rowing Australia National Selection Trials at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.
With both states having a proud history in the category over the past decade, the race for places in the Australian men’s lightweight squad looks set to be centred on the performances of their respective rowers.
On the first day of racing, the 14 athletes contesting selection enjoyed some tight racing with four-times Olympian Anthony Edwards (TAS) combining well with 2008 Beijing Olympian Sam Beltz (TAS) to claim two victories.
Both Tasmanians took a break after Beijing but are back with renewed energy as they bid to make the 2010 Australian Rowing Team.
“I have been doing a bit of racing domestically in Tasmania but it’s really good to be back up here and racing against all the boys from the other states,” Beltz said.
“There are a good number of lightweights up here and it makes it more of a challenge when there is strong competition.”
There is a queue forming behind Beltz and Edwards however, with Todd Skipworth (WA) and Ben Cureton (WA), who both featured in Beijing as part of the men’s lightweight four, also showing good speed across the water.
In 2009, Cureton and Skipworth both contested the 2009 Hawaiian Ironman as they kept up their fitness levels. Cureton finished in 20th place in the 25-29 age category, while Skipworth recorded a remarkable sixth place finish in the men’s 18-24 division.
“The Hawaiian Ironman was definitely a different challenge,” Cureton said. “It was good to have a year off from rowing and it was definitely a plan to come back but we just had to do something in the meantime.
“Although the triathlon wasn’t ideal for rowing training it was something that I had always wanted to do.
“I am really enjoying being back in the boat and I am finding a good balance now between rowing and work. It’s been a quick transition back from triathlon and I wouldn’t say we’re in an ideal position but we have a few tricks up our sleeves for tomorrow.”
Other finalists tomorrow will be Alister Foot (TAS) and Tom Gibson (TAS), Nick Baker (TAS) and Blair Tunevitsch (TAS), Ross Brown (WA) and Perry Ward (WA), and Michael McBryde (QLD) and Darryn Purcell (QLD).

RA media release:
Hore triumphs over talented field
Tasmanian sculler Kerry Hore has won the first final of the women’s single scull at the 2010 Rowing Australia National Selection Trials at Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.
Hore crossed the line ahead of a star studded field, with all six rowers in the final part of Australia’s 2008 Beijing Olympic team.
The 28-year-old raced from Lane 5 and held off a strong challenge from the fast finishing Toowoomba rower Sally Kehoe (QLD), while Kim Crow (VIC) claimed third position.
All six rowers that participated in this afternoon’s final will race a second final on Saturday morning, as the 2010 selection process continues.
Hore said that she was happy with the race she constructed.
“I’m really happy with that, especially considering it was a high quality field,” Hore said. “Training at the Institute (AIS) I know that the other girls are going quickly so I knew that I had to perform exceptionally well.
“I love being back. I am having a great time in Canberra at the Institute and feeling very passionate about it again.”
The first women’s lightweight single scull final went to Alice McNamara (VIC), who stroked to a hard victory over Queenslander Hannah Every-Hall, while Hannah Jansen (WA) was in third place.
In the semi-finals of the men’s single scull South Australian Chris Morgan prevailed in the first semi-final ahead of fellow South Australian James McRae, with Nick Hudson (NSW) taking third place. Morgan, who was part of the men’s quad scull that came fourth at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, has been in excellent form in 2010 after also taking out the single scull title at the Australian Rowing Championships.
In the second semi-final, Karsten Forsterling (VIC) led home state team mate David Crawhshay, with Danjels Reedman (NSW) claiming the last place in Saturday’s final.
AIS rowers Joshua Dunkley Smith (VIC) and Tom Larkins (VIC) won the first semi-final in the men’s pair with a close fought victory over Sam Loch (NSW) and Will Lockwood (NSW), and Bryn Coudraye (SA) and Tom Swann (VIC).
Meanwhile, Beijing silver medallists in the men’s four, Cameron McKenzie-McHarg (VIC) and James Marburg (VIC), recorded a win in the second semi-final over Matt Ryan (NSW) and Fergus Pragnell (NSW), with Dominic Grimm (NSW) and Ned Kinnear (SA) third.

RA media release:
Forsterling turns up the heat at selection trials
Australia’s top rowers have produced some solid racing on the first morning of the 2010 Rowing Australia National Selection Trials at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.
On a crystal clear day at the 2000 Olympic course, a number of athletes showed their intentions to the national selectors in the bid to make the 2010 Australian Rowing Team.
One of the standout performers was 2008 Beijing Olympic reserve Karsten Forsterling (VIC), who cruised to an impressive win in his heat of the men’s single scull.
Forsterling, who travelled to Beijing as part of the team in 2008, took a year off from racing in 2009, but has come back looking fresh and fit and crossed the line ahead of Brodie Buckland (NSW) and James McRae (SA).
Australian team captain, David Crawshay (VIC), comfortably won his heat of the men’s single scull, emphasising his standing as one of Australia’s top scullers. Crawshay, who won Olympic gold in 2008 in the men’s double scull and then silver at the 2009 World Championships in the men’s quad scull, enters the trials as a firm contender to make his eighth consecutive Australian Senior A team.
Kerry Hore (TAS) and Kim Crow (VIC) won their respective heats of the women’s single scull in an event that promises a tight final on Saturday morning.
Crow, 2008 Beijing Olympian in the women’s pair, came home strongly over the final 500m to lead Sally Kehoe (QLD) and Sarah Cook (ACT) through the finish line.
Meanwhile, Hore, in the second semi-final, produced a strong performance to finish ahead of Amber Bradley (WA) and Pip Savage (QLD).
Victorian pair Phoebe Stanley and Pauline Frasca set the quickest time in the heats of the women’s pair and will race from Lane 4 in the afternoon semi-final ahead of fellow Victorians Sarah Tait and Sarah Heard.
Rowing Australia National High Performance Director, Andrew Matheson, says there were some good performances across the board.
“After the build up to selection trials the athletes always appreciate getting their first hit out under the belt,” Matheson said. “We have a number of high quality athletes all pushing for the same goal of making the team in 2010, so seeing good performances is not a surprise.
“It is in the only first session of the week though, so it is important the same intensity is maintained across all boat disciplines.”
In other results Cameron McKenzie-McHarg (VIC) and James Marbug (VIC) won their heat of the men’s pair, with Joshua Dunkley Smith (VIC) and Tom Larkins (VIC) prevailing in the opposite heat.
Anthony Edwards (TAS) and Sam Beltz (TAS) combined to win their heat of the men’s lightweight pair, with Ben Cureton (WA) and Todd Skipworth (WA) crossing the line first in the other heat.
2009 Australian team member Alice McNamara (VIC) won her heat of the women’s lightweight single scull, with Hannah Every-Hall (QLD) securing the win in the second heat.
The semi-finals of the small boat racing will be staged this afternoon, with the first race scheduled for 2pm.

Men’s heavyweights set for selection showdown
The 2010 Rowing Australia National Selection Trials commence this Friday (23 April) with heats and semi-finals of small boat racing to headline action at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.
Competition for places on the 2010 Australian Rowing Team is expected to produce quality racing on the 2000 Olympic course, with much attention to be focused on the batch of Beijing Olympic rowers returning to competitive racing.
The men’s single scull heats feature no less than five Beijing Olympians, with men’s double scull Olympic gold medallist, David Crawshay (VIC), and South Australian Olympic duo Chris Morgan (SA) and James McRae (SA), set to impress.
Nick Hudson (NSW) and Jared Bidwell (QLD), members of Australia’s 2009 world championships silver medal winning quad scull, are also in the field, while 2008 Beijing gold medallist in the men’s pair, Duncan Free (QLD) will use the single scull to begin his selection campaign.
Free, who combined with Drew Ginn (VIC) in Beijing to win gold, took a year off in 2009 but is back in the selection race for 2010.
The 36-year-old Gold Coast resident has been training in the men’s pair with Sam Conrad (QLD), but with Conrad ruled out of the trials through injury, Free will race the single scull to gain race practice ahead of the trials for the men’s four and men’s eight later in the week.
Aside from the men’s single scull, heats of the women’s single scull, women’s lightweight single scull, men’s lightweight pair and men’s and women’s heavyweight pair, will also be held on Friday morning, with racing set to commence from 8am.
The National Selection Trials will run from April 23-May 2, with the Australian Senior A and Under 23 squads to be named on Sunday May 2.
The 2010 Australian Junior Rowing Team will be named on Monday 26 April.
A full race draw for Friday will be released on Thursday 22 April.

Young guns take first strokes towards Czech Republic
Australia’s next crop of rowers will be under the spotlight at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra this week, as the first Australian Junior camp of 2010 commences.
28 of Australia’s finest young rowers will converge on the nation’s capital to take part in the four day camp, with all aiming to further their chances of selection on the 2010 Australian Junior Team, which will compete at the Junior World Rowing Championships in the Czech Republic.
Selectors will choose five crews at the end of the National Junior Selection Trials (April 23 – April 25), with further success expected following an excellent 2009 regatta, that saw Australian crews make four out of five finals, with all four boats winning medals.
West Australian Hannah Vermeersch is the sole remaining member of the women’s four that won gold in 2009, with the other three members of the crew moving up to the Under 23 category in 2010.
Angus Moore (ACT) will contest selection again following a silver medal in the men’s coxed four in 2009 and is in strong form after winning the Under 19 men’s pair with fellow Canberra Grammar School rower Matthew Barnier (ACT) at the 2010 Australian Rowing Championships. Moore’s crew mate from the 2009 silver medal winning crew, Thomas Amies (QLD), is also aiming to make his second consecutive Australian Junior Team.
Queenslander Cameron Smith from the 2009 Aust Jun Men’s Quad is also in a strong position to make the team again after winning the national U19 single scull title recently in Nagambie, VIC.
Australian Sports Commission National Talent and Identification and Development program (NTID) Senior Coordinator Wayne Diplock says there is a talented group of athletes coming through the system.
“Following the establishment of the NTID program we have been fortunate to have gained further access to the rowing talent in the junior age groups,” Diplock said. “Aside from the talented collection of young athletes we have here this week, we also ran a specific NTID camp last weekend, with a group of athletes for whom we also hold high hopes.
“While a lot of the current attention falls on our senior rowers, we are making great progress with our next generation of rowers and we are happy with their development to date. Most of this group have a long road ahead of them, but the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro should be a long term goal for them.”
The camp will commence on Thursday 8 April and conclude on Sunday 11 April.
The Junior World Championships (Racice, Czech Republic) will be held from 5–8 August 2010, with the team announcement to take place on April 26.

Loreto celebrates in style
Loreto Kirribilli recently celebrated their rowing season with an awards night at the school and were joined by a special guest.
Loreto, who a week earlier had been presented with the Sydney Cup after winning the School Girls V111 at the Australian Rowing Championships, put in a special request to Rowing Australia to see if they could borrow the Cup for the evening. Rowing Australia was only too happy to oblige and sent the Sydney Cup up the Hume Highway to Sydney.
“I was excited that we were presented with the Cup in front of the whole squad and our parents because it brought home how much we have achieved,” said Amelia Halley, 3 seat of the winning crew.
“They could see the Cup we'd worked so hard for and it proved that Loreto isn't just another school with rowing but can really achieve."
"It was cool to be given the Cup at the awards night because we just got to look at it at Nagambie and then it was taken from us so it was cool to get it back in front of the school."

It was Loreto’s first victory in the event that was first staged in 1994 and a crowning moment for the school’s rowing program.
Coach Christopher Holliday said the surprise of receiving the Cup a second time was extra special.
"What an honour. It was amazing to be holding the Cup. It has been a very special season for us. I didn't get to hold it at Nagambie so it was a great surprise and delight to be presented with it at the Loreto awards evening."

Queenwood re-write history books with stunning win
The Queenwood School capped off an excellent season of rowing by claiming its first ever Girls’ Head of the River title at the Sydney International Regatta Centre on Saturday 20 March.
In a race that has been dominated by Pymble Ladies College, who had won for 12 consecutive years, the Queenwood 1st V111 completed a start-to-finish victory over the 2000m, to win by two seconds over national champions, Loreto Kirribilli.
Ahead of the annual Head of the River, Loreto Kirribilli had established themselves as favourites, following their first ever national championships victory in the Sydney Cup at the 2010 Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Nagambie.
Queenwood had not entered the Australian Rowing Championships, but had instead travelled to the New Zealand Nationals, where four of their 1st V111 girls had combined to win gold in the Under 19 Coxed Four.
Loreto had also prevailed by 1.7 seconds over Queenwood at the NSW State Championships in early February, which paved the way for an exciting race at the final regatta of the year.
Queenwood, cheered on by a raucous crowd on the banks of the 2000 Sydney Olympic course, set up their victory with a strong start, crossing the line in 6:58.79, ahead of Loreto, with Normanhurst claiming third position.
The healthy rivalry that continues to build between Sydney’s premier rowing schools paves for an exciting future of school rowing in New South Wales and plans are no doubt underway for the 2010/2011 season.

Rower reaches amazing century
One of Australia’s eldest rowing statesmen celebrated a significant milestone on Tuesday 30 March.
Andy Sneddon, who was born on 30 March 1910, turned 100 and marked the occasion with a party at Northmead in Sydney.

Andy is a Life Member of Sydney Rowing Club and has been a member since 1935 – an incredible 75 years.
Among Andy’s rowing career highlights were stroking the Scots College 1st V111 in the 1927 GPS Head of the River, stroking the Sydney Rowing Club to a number of lightweight eight state championships in the 1930’s and a victory in the 1935 NSW Championships lightweight eight race.
Away from rowing, Andy served as a Major in the Australian army in WWII, served as an alderman in the Parramatta Council in the 1970’s and served the Nestles company as a valued employee for over 25 years.
On his 100th birthday, congratulatory cards were read from Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, while a large contingent from the NSW rowing community was on hand to join in the celebrations.
Rowing Australia would like to congratulate Andy on his milestone, his love for rowing, and wish him all the best in the future.
