Australia crosses Tasman for World Championships
The Australian Rowing Team has departed Sydney this morning to compete at the 2010 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.
15 Australian crews will compete at the 2010 World Rowing Championships, with the Australian squad consisting of 50 athletes.
The regatta, which runs from 31 October-7 November, will feature 49 countries from across the globe looking to gain ascendency ahead of the Olympic qualification year in 2011.
Rowing Australia National High Performance Director Andrew Matheson says the squad is primed to compete in New Zealand.
“We have just come off the back of a successful training camp in Penrith over the past two weeks and all 15 crews are ready to race,” Matheson says. “The World Championships are always a very strong guide to where our program is placed and we will look for a strong showing across the eight days of competition.”
A notable inclusion in the Australian team include the return of 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medallist Duncan Free, who will international return to the men’s single scull for the first time since 2003.
Free, who was Australia’s leading sculler for over a decade, made the switch to sweep oar rowing after the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and won two world championships and the Olympic title with Drew Ginn in the men’s pair.

Captain Tait looks to lead Australia from the front
The Australian Rowing Team has reached its final days of preparation ahead of the 2010 World Rowing Championships that begin on Sunday 31 October 2010 at Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.
The team, which has been in training together at the Sydney International Regatta Centre for the last 8 days, will finalise their preparations this weekend before flying across the Tasman this Tuesday (October 26).
Australia has 15 crews competing at the World Championships, a regatta that will answer a lot of questions about the direction of Australian rowing in the Olympic qualification year in 2011.
International rowing crews will have their first chance to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games at the 2011 World Rowing Championships.
Australian women’s captain Sarah Tait (VIC), who is one of 13 Beijing Olympians and Paralympians making their return to the Australian team in 2010, says the morale in the camp is high heading into the regatta next week.
“It is always great having everyone together in camp but I guess preparation is still a bit individual at this stage and everyone is still sticking to their own crew training plans,” Tait said. “Everyone is working really hard and as a whole team we will meet over the coming days to finalise our build up.”
Tait, who will row in the women’s pair with Phoebe Stanley (VIC), says she is looking forward to the World Championships.
“Phoebe and I are obviously a new combination, but since August we have put some really good work in together,” Tait said. “We did some race pieces yesterday and felt really good afterwards.
“We just need to work on a couple of things over the next few days but our preparation has been great.”
49 countries have entered the 2010 World Rowing Championships, with the new regatta format featuring finals on four days of competition, instead of just two days as in previous years. It is the first time this format has been used, and is a trial ahead of the schedule that will be used at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
