James Tomkins & Mike McKay
JT: "that was the toughest by far, it was just a fantastic race, the whole way down at the most two seats difference, they got out a little bit out of the start, then we came back, we got a little bit on them, then at 500 to go it was dead level, 250 to go it was dead level, then we basically went bananas at the end." When asked if that was the sweetest victory of the 15 he said: "they are all fanstatic in their own right, I struggle trying to remember some of them." Mike McKay who rowed with Tomkins in the Oarsome Foursome acknowledged the fine performance of Western Australia: "They did a fantastic row and we knew they were going to be on the ball, it is a fight, fight to get over the line." |

"that is number 5 if my memory serves me correctly..it was a mighty last 500 I was think dead heat again it was neck and neck with WA..just listening to the crowd helped us.. to win it here in front of everyone it creates a little bit of history" |

Duncan Free
How many is that "six all up" It could be renamed the Duncan Free Cup "I would be happy with that, no but I think President's Cup is good it keeps the tradition in it" How long can you keep going for: "who knows take it year by year." |

Nick Hudson, stroke NSW
"we knew it was going to be a tough race, our plan was to for it at the 250, go at the 500, keep on going at the 750 to we were in front, we got that lenghth at the start and then go motivation and keep it going to the finish." |

Sara Outhwaite WA Youth 8
"it was excellent we made a special push, through the 2nd 500, it went really well and we just pushed through the other crews, bascially just sat there for the rest of the race"

Amanda Smith, stroke winning SG8
"It was awesome we just pushed all the way, and pushed ourselves away. We have been undefeated all season. The delay did not upset, we just kept our focus." |

Amber Halliday & Sally Causby
AB: "it was a good row, solid, it is good to have that to build on for the International season now" SC: "I did not row the single saving everything for the double" " they say it is even tougher at the top, no under dog status for us this year." |
 |

Anthony Edwards
"It was good to have the hit out really, it is a good opportunity to spend sometime in race mode and race practice for the Worlds" |

Peter Hardcastle 2nd
"Going into it Duncan is pretty hard to beat, I think it was really good to place myself where I wanted to place myself. Out there today is where I want to be and where I belive I should be. John Boultbee just told me I was overlaping him (Duncan) at the end, so that is a big step. I came home strong instead of easing it back and knowing I am in second, pushing that extra bit harder." |

Duncan Free 1st
"I was happy with that coming out of the selection regatta I was not sure how I would go with the week in between, I was happy with the result in the end. The pressure was on me I spoke to James and Drew before it and they said do not do the same mistakes as they did and learn from it. I was aware that some of the favourites didn’t win in some of the other events so I had to try and makesure I was not in that category." |

Sally Newmarch 1st
"I have not won that race before..I think the head wind favoured me being a bigger lightweight, compared to the others I could go a little better than the others and I just had a good day...I am looking forward to rowing the quad (at the World Championships), but as I said it is only a stepping stone to Athens |

Victoria Roberts & Monique Heinke 2nd pair
Disappointing? Absolutely when you have had a winning season and particularly being here at Lake Barrington, but we have had a fantastic season and we are very happy with our results." The men's pair going down as well is there something to do with selection? MH: "I guess the pressure is bit off after selection trials a few weeks ago" VR:" I guess it is the same for Drew & Jim they are focusing for the World Championships" |

Kristina Larsen & Jodi Winter
KL" It was good we just paced ourselves through the race, we came home really hard in the last 500 metres and took the lead.. We were coming third all the way until about 250 to go until we said 'OK this is it, lets go'... we have a good group atmosphere but always very competitive" |
 |
| 24/4/2003 11:05 |
James Tomkins & Drew Ginn
JT: "It was good for the 1st 500 and then we hit that water and well, we did not handle it at all well, so it is something we certainly have to look at going forward." Do you think you have problems with rough water, you had problems in Seville it was rough (last year's Worlds) JT "we are using a very sharp shaped boat, which is very fast but is also very unstable, so we sort of struggle a little bit, when it is a little bit unsettling, we are certainly aware of that situation we are going to address the boat and they way we actually racing in it." Can you read anything into that result? DG: "on the day we were beaten by a better crew, personally I think we came here a bit half hearted, no excuses we have given it everything today, we have just come up short today" |

Bo Hanson & Geoff Stewart
BH: "we got the basics really right and the boat was moving sweet, take a bit of easy ground through the middle" GS:"we have only been rowing the combination for a couple of months and it is starting it is really starting to improve, we are going pretty well so far" BH: "we are really starting to get a lot of things together and got a really sweet timing in the boat, every time we put the oar in the water it is moving rally sweetly, so it is getting the easy speed." Would you be looking for the pair in Athens? BH: "we will have to wait and see." |

Peter Hardcastle 1st M1X
"It was a good race, semi final 1, out there basically settled into a good rhythm, get out in front and see what I can do, especially after the selection trials not having a very good one in the semi finals Tom Edwards beating me, I wanted to consolidate at what I believe I am good at." Do you think you can beat Duncan in the final: "Duncan has been the top of Australia since 1996, I think Chook you asked that question last year and the year before, I think he is very, very, very difficult to beat this time of year and especially at the moment, but basically I want to consolidate and beat the people, who have beaten me at selection regattas, before I tackle Duncan." |
 |
| 23/4/2003 13:54 |
Dana Faletic, W1X, 3rd Semi
Do you have much left for the final: "Well that was the idea, not to give everything away, have a little bit of legs left for tomorrow, I think I did enough to get through today, so I will see how I go tomorrow" Re Tassie doing well: "we have some good scullers in the guys and the girls, and hope we can get more people on the (National) team this year." |
 |
| 23/4/2003 13:36 |
Brendan Long, 2nd semi M1X
"quite good, I had a pretty good row it was pretty close in the end it was all right" Re the final do you think you can beat Duncan Free: "no I don't think I can, I will just try and have the best row I can, hopefully I will go all right... I have had a good year" |
 |
| 22/4/2003 11:31 |
Mike McKay after 4th in rep
"Mike McKay after finishing 4th & scraping through to final I guess we are in the final, that is all you can say...we have been struggling, Hammer (Jaime Fernandez) has been crook, we have had some reasonable early speed, but then not been able to continue it through, so that was sort of a bit better, really when other crew have their foot down we are not really to go with them at the moment, so that is a bit disappointing, but just trying to be realistic about it all...obviously just have to just get to the trails really, missed a month with the blood clot, so really just getting back into the racing....it has not affected my racing just my preparation February - March, I would like to go away in the team this year, but there are some good young blokes around, see how I fare in May....James & Drew have shown sort they are above everyone else in the pair, so the eight is the second boat...we had a couple of rows (in the four) in September & October last year it went along pretty well and we have not had a chance so it is pretty much scratch combo but we did want to try it and see how we went." |
 |
| 21/4/2003 13:25 |
James Tomkins
"It was good out there, it was quite conservative, it was quite tricky conditions out there...the waves are bouncing on to start...two weeks ago we had our National selection trials and you really try to peak for those, it is difficult mentality to be firing on all cyclinders...every race we have now we are setting ourselves for the World Championships trying to get something out of every race |
