The Queens Cup / ULVA Trophy

This trophy was first presented in 1999 for the Interstate contest between women’s eights. It was considered an eight oar event should be contested for women.

Interstate women’s rowing has been contested since 1920 in fours. The first race was won by South Australia. A trophy was struck known as the ULVA Trophy, as it was presented by United Licensed Victuallers Association of Queensland, which depicted Dorothy Arnold Ekins from the winning Southern Australian crew holding an oar and dressed in the rowing garb of her day…floppy hat, sailor top and billowing bloomers.

The distance of women's races has varied over the years, originally 3/4 mile, then from 1922 to 1937 1/2 mile, 1938 to 1959 3/4 mile, 1960 to 1984 1000 meters and 1985 to present 2000 meters.
