The Victoria Cup
History of The Victoria Cup
The first Interstate Women’s Lightweight event was held on the Yarra River in Melbourne with a victory to Victoria. The crew was stroked by Margaret Agnew McKenzie who pressed hard with the Women’s Rowing Council to have Lightweight rowing as part of the Interstate Program. The Victoria Cup was presented by the Victorian Ladies Rowing Association as the perpetual trophy for this event.
Internationally, Lightweight women have recorded many victories and Australia was at the forefront for inclusion of Lightweight women’s rowing at the World Championships and Olympic Games.
With the inclusion of sculling in the Olympic Games and a Lightweight Quad at the World Championships the Victoria Cup was changed from Four to a Quad Scull in 1999.
