One hundred and forty six rowers for the Australian Olympic Youth Festival,
from seven Australian States and New Zealand will settle into their new home for
the next five days, the mini athletes Village at Richmond in western Sydney.
The village is about a 15 minute road trip from the Olympic Course. It is part
of the University of Western Sydney and is set in a semi rural environment.
The athletes will experience as if it was an Olympics with a dining hall, exercise
area, medical area and social area. Buses will be used to take the rowers to
competition and training as well as the Opening Ceremony at the Sydney Entertainment
Centre on Wednesday 8th at 7.00 pm.
Upon arrival at their village the rowers will
be quickly on the move, at 3.30 pm Tuesday to the Sydney International Regatta
Centre. There they will be rigging boats and getting a feel of the course. They
will be fine tuning their preparation, practicing starts out of starting pontoons,
rowing slowly over the course, making mental notes of various landmarks and working
out where they will be putting in efforts and probably just doing some short sharp
500s. Like an Olympic Games the rower will not have the Regatta Centre and
Village to themselves. They will be required to share the facilities with Canoeists
and Slalom paddlers.
