They maybe one of the smallest states in relation to land but watch
the Island state during the AYOF. At the first AYOF two years ago the Tasmanian
contingent won numerous races at they are set to improve upon that performance.
Tasmania has produced many champion rowers over the years. A couple that always
spring to mind are Steve Hawkins who won a Gold Medal in the Double Scull at the
1992 Olympics and Simon Burgess who won a silver at the Sydney Olympics. The
Tasmanian Rowers have had a huge development program for many years. But over
the last few years they have been firmly focused on building a strong base for
the National Championships on their home course Lake Barrington International in
April 2003.
The rowers racing at the AYOF will be fully aware of their performances as
they head towards the National Champs when they will be on show in front of their
home crowd. Team manager Helen Street said: “We have a fairly strong team, a few
from the Australian Junior Team a couple of years ago. We have been training
hard over the last two weeks as a group, because they come from three parts of
the state. The men’s lightweight are very strong and we have a good sculler.”
Helen said the rowers are looking forward to the Olympic experience. “they are
very excited about it.”
