Welcome to the 50th edition of RA News!
The structure of the newsletter system has changed slightly but you will still get all of the same information in an easier to read format.
Enjoy!
From the CEO
The newsletter has been reformatted to align with the trends in modern communication and will provide all readers with even more Australian rowing news.
The change coincides with the busiest time in the international rowing calendar, with two of three world championships events completed, and the 2009 FISA World Rowing Championships commencing next week.
Our U23 crews competed in Racice, Czech Republic at the end of July, while our juniors recently won four medals in a tremendous performance in France. You can read more about these results later in the newsletter.
Our senior crews will take to the water in Poland from 23 August. The ten crews arrived in Italy last Monday for a final training camp at the AIS training facility in Varese and will move to Poland this Wednesday ahead of the start of the regatta. You will be able to follow race results and all regatta news via the Rowing Australia website.
WCSN is still providing discounted rates for rowing members via the link on the RA website. This will be a great way to see our crews perform in Poland.
The Australian Sports Commission has recently approved the $2.2million construction of a combined Rowing Australia and National Rowing Centre of Excellence (NRCE) office at the current AIS site in Yarralumla. The planning process will begin immediately with construction expected to be completed in about 12 months. This is another exciting step for Australian rowing and will allow all Rowing Australia and NRCE staff to work from a central operating environment.
There were a number of important outcomes from the Rowing Australia Board Meeting on 2 August, including:
- Rowing Australia has fully confirmed their commitment to ROMS including the approval of new financial model. More news on this will be available at a later date.
- Approval was given to standardise membership categories. More details will follow.
- Following public consultation the Board approved a number of changes to the 2010 Australian Rowing Championships program, including the introduction of club events.
I hope you all enjoy the 2009 World Rowing Championships and I wish the best of success to all our ten competing crews.
Best Wishes
Andrew Dee
