Records tumble as rowers prepare for National Championships

Entries closed for the 2007 Australian Rowing Championships yesterday with over 1500 rowers entering the regatta.

With many entrants participating in more than one event, over 3400 seats have been filled for the week long event.

55 girls have entered the School Girls Single Scull discipline which is a new record. There were also 55 entries received for the U19 Men’s Single Scull.

The increase in numbers can be attributed to the joint AIS and Rowing Australia program Breaking the Drought. The program is seeking to develop young rowers who have the potential to become Olympic Champions at the London Olympic Games in 2012.

Sykes Racing is sponsoring the program and has offered a single scull boat to both the Boy’s and Girl’s Single Scull Champion at the Australian Rowing Championships.

The Australian Rowing Championships are being held at Nagambie Lakes, Victoria between 5–11 March.

For more information please visit www.rowingaustralia.com.au or call David Polglase on (02) 6273 0232 or 0401 453 041.

NSW Championships provide perfect hit out for rowers

The NSW Rowing Championships were held on 17-18 February at the Sydney International Regatta Centre with the majority of the Australian National Shadow Squad competing.

With the Australian Rowing Championships starting in a fortnight the regatta provided Australia’s best rowers with the perfect lead up to the national titles.

Kerry Hore and Daniel Noonan won the Women’s and Men’s Single Sculls amidst tight competition in both events.

Hore beat home her Australian team mates Pippa Savage and Brooke Pratley in an impressive display that was confirmation of her hard training regime in recent weeks.

The 2006 World Champion Women’s Double Scull of Brooke Pratley and Liz Kell continued their dominance in the event by leading home the combination of Savage and Hore and Sonia Mills and Amy Ives.

Other notable performances came from Tom Laurich and Fergus Pragnell in the Men’s Pair and Sarah Cook and Kim Crow in the corresponding women’s event.

The standard of rowing was extremely high and is a welcome sign leading into selection trials and the international season.

Victoria will hold their state championships next weekend before Australia converges on Nagambie Lakes between 5 – 11 March for the Australian Rowing Championships.

Rowing-Anthrop 3D Laser Scanning study

Take time at Nationals to keep Australia at the forefront of rowing science.

The Australian Institute of Sport is seeking the involvement of competitors at the 2007 Nationals in a world–first study using laser scanning technology to produce 3D body images. The information generated by these scans will be used to examine the relationship between physical dimensions and regatta results, allowing unprecedented evaluation of current approaches to talent identification.

The procedure, to be conducted at a convenient location at Nagambie Lakes, takes ~30 minutes (including ~1 minute for the actual scan) and all volunteers will receive a CD with visuals of their personal 3D image.

For further information and registration visit www.ais.org.au/rowing/Anthrop_study.asp or contact:

Australia’s women handed late silver

Australia’s women quadruple sculls 2006 World Championships crew of Dana Faletic, Sonia Mills, Catriona Sens and Sally Kehoe yesterday had their bronze medal upgraded to silver.

Russian rower Olga Samulenkova, who tested positive to a prohibited substance, has been banned for two years.

The Russian quadruple sculls crew have all consequently been stripped of their Gold medals and disqualified from the championships.

The ruling allows the Great Britain crew to be crowned World Champions, while elevating Australia to Silver and Germany to Bronze.

2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival: wrap-up

The Australian Youth Olympic Festival was staged in Sydney between the 17th and 21st of January.

The rowing regatta was held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, the site of the rowing for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

The festival offered each state the chance to compete separately against countries including the Great Britain, New Zealand and China.

Following two hard days of competition the Australian state crews performed admirably with NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia sharing 14 medals between them.

Great Britain led the way with a total of 6 Gold Medals. Please find below the full medal table.

A notable highlight of the regatta was the Gold medal won by the NSW Men’s 8+. The atmosphere for this marquee race had the crowd in raptures as the crews powered towards the line. The NSW crew of Luke Freeman, Luke Woods, Alistair Matthews, David Neuhaus, Andrew Connolly, Mitchell Estens, Bede Clarke, Kurt Spencer and coxswain Toby Lister held off the fast finishing Great Britain to the delight of the parochial crowd.

Other Australian crews to pick up Gold medals included the Western Australian women’s Coxless Pair of Emily Rose and Elizabeth Alderman, and the Tasmanian women’s and men’s lightweight double sculls of Carly Cottam and Ella Flecker, and Jono Hookway and Jarrod Matthews.

The competition was a terrific learning experience for all rowers who competed and also a good prequel to the World Junior Rowing Championships to be held in Beijing later in the year.

Berry Hayworth Durston, AM
1/8/1940 – 19/1/2007

Last Friday, the sport of rowing lost one of its most significant and longstanding contributors Berry Durston AM, when he passed away suddenly at home in Perth.

Berry’s contribution to rowing in Australia is matched by few.

Berry attended The Hale School in Perth and rowed in the 2nd 8+ in 1957.  Despite not reaching the 1st 8+, Berry continued to row when entering university and he quickly made his impact as an elite rower.

Rowing as a member of the University of West Australia Boat Club, Berry rowed the 6 seat in the West Australian King’s Cup crew that won the 1960 event in Launceston.

The King’s Cup winning crew in 1960 gained automatic qualification to the Olympic Games, as per the regulations of the era.

Berry and his crew travelled to Rome in 1960 but they were all hampered by a severe case of influenza so were unable to showcase their full ability.

Having won the King’s Cup in 1960 Berry subsequently competed in 1961, 1962, 1963, 1965 and 1971.

Bow: Milton A Francis, 2: E N Maslen, 3: R T Luke, 4: Berry H Durston, 5: C L Fisher, 6: J A Wickham, 7: Ronald Hardy, Str: John K Negus, Cox: Terrence Scook

Berry was captain of the University of Western Australia Boat Club and was awarded the West Australian University Sportsperson of the Year Award in 1960.

Bob Hemery, current Secretary General of Commonwealth Games Victoria, rowed against Durston in the 1950’s and 1960’s as part of the Swan River Boat Club.

“Berry was always a very formidable opponent and was one of the most dominant oarsman of the period”, Hemery said. “He was always placing 100 per cent into his rowing and his contribution after he retired from rowing will be remembered for a long time to come.”

Following his retirement from competitive rowing in the early 1970s, Berry’s contribution to the sport continued stronger than ever.

He was awarded his West Australian Official Boat Race License in 1971, his Rowing Australia Official Boat Race License in 1977, and his international Boat Race license by FISA in 1986.

He has umpired at most Australian National Championships since 1977 and has featured at World Championships and the Olympics as a rowing umpire.

Berry also held a number of sporting positions at both national and state level in Western Australia.

He was Rowing Australia President from 1979 – 1983.

Berry was awarded Life Membership to Rowing Western Australia in 1978, whilst also being awarded Life Membership to Rowing Australia in 1993.

On January 26, 2000 he was awarded an Order of Australia Award for his contribution to rowing in Australia.

In the same year he received an Award of Merit from the Western Australia Sports Federation.

Craig James, President of Rowing Western Australia, worked with Berry for over 30 years and admits that Australian rowing has been shocked by the passing of the 67 year old.

“Berry’s contribution to rowing in Australia and Western Australia was outstanding”, James said. “His was a one in a century contribution. His legacy will be enjoyed by rowing for many years.”

Berry also was heavily involved in Olympic and Commonwealth Games committee’s and held the following positions at the time of his passing:

  • President, Australian Commonwealth Games Association, WA Division
  • Vice President, Western Australian Olympic Council
  • Co-Patron, Australian Olympic & Commonwealth Games Team / WA Appeal Committee

Rowing Australia President Pat McNamara said that Berry’s passing was a significant loss to the sport of rowing.

“Berry was at the forefront of rowing in Australia for the past 50 years”, McNamara said. “Whilst enjoying a successful rowing career culminating in Olympic selection in 1960, Berry also was a great innovator following his move into administration.”

“He has left Rowing Western Australia in a financially strong position with a terrific junior program in place.  He will be sorely missed.”

Berry is survived by his wife Margaret, daughters Kelly and Amanda, and grandchildren Matthew, Lucas, Harrison, Samantha and Jared.

Rowing Australia sends its condolences to Berry’s family on behalf of the rowing community.

A ceremony celebrating Berry’s life will be held at 1.30 pm on Wednesday 24 January at the Karrakatta Crematorium in Perth.
